School and after-school leaders, educators, museum leaders and other science champions from 13 states will meet over two days at the New York Hall of Science to plot next steps in a national movement to make science inquiry beyond school hours universally accessible to all kids.

On June 3, the Collaborative for Building After-School Systems (CBASS) and The After-School Corporation (TASC) will host 70 national visitors for an information and strategy session on expanding out-of-school time science opportunities for kids who might otherwise not consider aiming for science careers. The following day, TASC will introduce more than 100 New York City-area educators and after-school staff members to research-tested after-school science curricula. These hands-on curricula on conservation, space and other topics are customized to take best advantage of after-school and summer programs and out-of-school venues including museums. The Noyce Foundation is providing support for both events.

Speakers will include Michele Cahill, Vice President of National Programs and Program Director, Urban Education, for the Carnegie Corporation of New York. Ms. Cahill co-chairs “The Opportunity Equation,” the corporation’s commission to improve math and science education. Diane Miller, Senior Vice President for School and Community Partnerships at the St. Louis Science Center, and Pam Garza, who leads professional development for the National 4-H Council, will address sessions on using out-of-school time to meet the national imperative for all kids to become math-and-science-literate.
