A group of middle school students from SoBRO’s after-school program at PS-MS 3 recently won a $2,500 grant from the television station Nickelodeon to support their efforts to clean up five acres of neglected ball fields adjacent to their school. The students plan to use to grant money to buy plants, flowers and trees, as well as painting supplies for a mural.
The students have been working on the “Green Our Park” campaign since February 2009. Earlier this year, the students met with Bronx Borough Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte, who agreed to work with the students to plant a garden, repaint benches and create a mural.
The SoBRO/PS-MS 3 group is part of TASC’s Community Justice Project, which helps New York City kids make real change in their communities. To learn more about their campaign, watch this video:
