Richard R. Buery, Jr., the co-founder and executive director of the Brooklyn nonprofit organization Groundwork, has joined the governing committee of The Center for After-School Excellence. The mission of the Center is to build a comprehensive system of university-based professional development for the after-school workforce.
Robert D. Joffe, Presiding Partner at Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP, was elected today to chair the Board of Directors of The After-School Corporation. Mr. Joffe replaces Robert K. Steel, who resigned from the board upon being confirmed as the U.S. Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance.
CUNY college presidents, New York City Schools Chancellor Joel I. Klein and leaders of business, government and philanthropy met today to lay the groundwork to create the first comprehensive system of professional development for staff who work in after-school programs.
Recent research conducted by Policy Studies Associates for The After-School Corporation (TASC) and the Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) echoes what the after-school field has found over the course of the past decade, that after-school programs can contribute to increased student achievement. But, perhaps most interesting, the study found that after-school programs that helped lead to improved achievement don’t necessarily focus on academics.
