What did you do after school? Dance, debate, lead a team? Those opportunities were no doubt important for you. But given the demands and complexities of the world kids soon will grow to lead, it’s essential for all to have opportunities to move their bodies, master new content, and develop their talents, passions and capabilities in the hours after 3.
Kids spend 80 percent of their waking hours outside of school. Many engage in great activities. But more than 15 million kids – that’s one in every four – are on their own when the school day ends, headed for the TV or the street. That’s a huge missed opportunity for them and for us. A decade of research confirms that kids are more likely to succeed, in and out of school, when they engage in activities that respond to their passions and support their healthy development. It’s our job to expand the time and ways kids learn so education doesn’t stop for many at 3 PM.
